    When a druid boy's father is caught by the king's guards, the boy sends out a telepathic call for help, to which Merlin responds and offers sanctuary; but, under penalty of death to anyone harboring the boy, will Merlin be willing to put himself and his friends in mortal danger? And when Uther's dungeon dragon hints of dark prophecies linked to the boy, will Merlin then turn a blind eye?

    The Nightmare Begins

    Morgana realizes she has magic powers when she sets her room on fire from her bed. Against the advice of Gaius and the dragon, Merlin sends her to seek advice from the Druids. Uther, believing she has been abducted, orders the deaths of all suspected sorcerers and their sympathizers unless she is returned, so Merlin goes after her. Locating her in the Druid village where chieftain Aglain tells her the truth (giving her confidence that magic can be used for good), Merlin must get her back to Camelot before Arthur and a vengeful search party catches up with them and kills all.

    Mordred brings a warlock, Alvarr, to see Morgana, and they persuade her to steal a crystal with magical properties from the vaults of Camelot. Alvarr tells her it can be used to help people like themselves with special powers, though he really intends to destroy Camelot with it. Merlin and Arthur pursue him, returning him and the crystal to court. Mordred escapes, and Morgana (having disowned Uther), springs Alvarr from prison by drugging the guards. Merlin, having looked into the crystal, is alarmed by a vision of chaos, but Gaius assures him that it is far into the future.
