In 1935, beleaguered Bournemouth mother Louisa Durrell decides to uproot her problematic family and build a new life on the Greek island of Corfu. However, they soon find that island life presents its own problems.

Theo and his neighbour Sven must put their rudimentary medical skills to the test when Larry Durrell falls dangerously ill. Spiros brings the family some good news that may ease their financial worries.

Margo takes great pride in her new job at the surgery, but realises where her greatest talent lies. Louisa wonders if she's made a mistake bringing her family to Corfu when Gerry befriends a convict.

Leslie is accused of armed robbery, forcing Louisa to take drastic action to save him. Margo takes a shine to a gardener at the Villa and the family realise the extent of Gerry's passion for animals.

Larry's novel is being published in England, but his mother is more concerned with baking food for the market. Leslie decides to launch his own business after hearing how Pavlos makes his own liquor.

Louisa is struggling to adapt to Larry moving out, making her conscious of the fact that all of her children will one day leave home. She throws caution to the wind embarking on a relationship with Hugh.

Larry returns to the family villa due to mumps, but even that doesn't put off a visit from overbearing Aunt Hermione. She is accompanied by a medium who claims to have made contact with Louisa's late husband.

Hugh organises a cricket match to bring everyone together. Spiro tells Louisa that she has terrible taste in men. Larry finds that Vasilia wants to advance their relationship faster than expected.

When Lugaretzia's daughter goes into labour Larry is sent to fetch Dr. Petrides, but he has his hands full delivering his own child. Theo and Gerry make a discovery at the den. Margo is delighted two men are fighting over her.

The family discover Leslie has three girlfriends, Louisa comes up with an idea to help him choose one of them. Gerry adds to his animal collection, Larry injures his leg and Aunt Hermione arrives in Corfu to stay permanently.

After Larry discovers Aunt Hermione has died in her sleep she is given a bizarre memorial service organized by Margo before Louisa and Larry escort the body back to England. Leslie is shocked to learn that he has impregnated Daphne, one of his former girlfriends, and makes a compromise when her father demands a shotgun wedding though Margo finds herself succumbing to the persistent Zoltan.

Louisa and her staid cousins attend Aunt Hermione's funeral in rainy Bournemouth, which Larry misses, staying with a group of Bohemian artists - including author Henry Miller - in London. Louisa decides to follow him and soon finds herself a centre of attention before the couple return to Corfu. Here they find that Gerry has rescued an ill-treated donkey and newly-appointed policeman Leslie's attempt to ward off marauders has nearly ruined Margo's relationship with Zoltan.

In the town, Larry meets Elena, a beautiful, exotic young woman who, along with her friend, the bearded woman, happen to be part of the travelling circus. Elena reveals she is a contortionist and after she performs some of her moves, Larry falls quickly in love. Keen to get involved, Louisa and Spiros help the circus drum up business whilst Margo starts to rehearse a very risky act and Gerry makes sure the animals are being treated well. With the magic of the circus rubbing off on the whole family, will it work its charm on Louisa and Spiros?
