    Grace reveals a technicality that could free convicted cop killer Lyle Torrey. But a certain police officer, named Lt. Dolan, tries to prevent Grace from getting Torrey released pending a new trial. Becker forms a partnership with Dave Meyer in trying to make their own do-it-yourself-divorce video tape to market to the masses. Meanwhile, Abby grows more attracted to Lt. Ringstrom and they finally begin a torrid affair. Also, Kelsey and Markowitz meet with a possible birth mother to adopt her baby.

Meanwhile, Benny develops a crush on Becker's current girlfriend, Allison Gottlieb, the director for his divorce video, after he saves her from a rude bar patron.     Grace once again faces off against Lee Atkins, the conniving and racist black lawyer, who again uses the issue of race in which he is defending a middle-aged black man who shot and killed a white man in his apartment whom he thought was an intruder, whereas Grace's argument is that it was a drug deal gone wrong. Seeing that the odds are against him this time, Atkins resorts to low and underhanded means against Grace to get a mistrial declared rather than lose. Meanwhile, Abby unwisely advices a client of hers to accept a settlement because her own practice is in financial difficulty. Markowitz and Kelsey are contacted by their baby broker who has information on a possible baby girl that they can adopt. Allison Gottlieb rejects Becker, but she goes out on a date with Victor and they immediately engage in a passionate affair.

Roxanne tells Meyer that she thinks they should separate for a while to sort out their feelings for each other. Meanwhile, Becker and Dave Meyer are both sued over their divorce video by a woman who claimed the result made her broke and Becker feels betrayed when he's left to fend for himself when the other partners want nothing to do with the suit. Brackman asks Rollins and Diana to help him peruse a case against a cereal company who botched a cash give-away contest. Also, Victor and Allison have dinner with Rosalind Shays where she charms Victor, but not a suspicious Allison who confides in Victor that she doesn't trust Rosalind.

Meanwhile, Markowitz loses his cool when Kelsey goes into labor early and 20 hours later give birth to a baby boy. Benny celebrates the Christmas holidays by planning to propose to Alice and asks both Becker and Leo Hackett on advice on how to do so. Also, Becker faces the holidays alone when Corrinne decides to let Chloe's father spend the weekend with them at her home, and Victor plays Santa at the annual office Christmas party.

    Victor faces troubling issues both at home and in court as he tries to deal with the after-effects of Allison's rape trial and a sexual discrimination case concerning a woman court clerk suing a judge who fired her after their brief affair. Meanwhile, Markowitz takes another litigation case where he defends an elderly and senile Orthodox rabbi being sued for malpractice when a knife slipped during a circumcision. Becker returns to his hostile co-workers as a named partner to the firm now named 'McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney, Kuzak and Becker.' Also, the devious, two-faced Rosalind Shays begins a secret plan to solidify her base of power at the firm by bringing in groups of influential clients as well as using her charms to take the business of the firm's old clients.
