When well-meaning 23-year-old Jimmy Chance has a one-night stand with a wanted felon, he ends up being a dad to a bouncing baby girl. Inspired to do the right thing by his daughter, he has to convince his less-than-enthusiastic parents and great-grandmother to help him raise her.

When Jimmy returns to work, he hires Sabrina's cousin Shelley - a/k/a "Dead Tooth" - to babysit Hope. Meanwhile, Burt tries to get Virginia to quit smoking.

Sabrina's boyfriend can't make it to the deli guy's Halloween party, so Jimmy offers to put on his costume and go in his place. Virginia takes Maw Maw, who is dressed as a cat, trick-or-treating while Burt plots ways to play tricks on Jimmy.

When the doctor refuses to comment on Hope's symptoms, probably just a cold, without insurance data, Jimmy is shocked to learn his family never got some. An embarrassing episode, trying to buy potentially addictive cough-syrup at the supermarket, inspires Jimmy to seek employment there, as it comes with insurance. Burt however may not know, as he claims he can get the whole family insured by winning a city contract biding against his former employer, Green Thumb, which even Virginia won't believe. meanwhile maw maw in quarantined, or at least that's attempted, for a cold could kill her.

Jimmy wants Hope's first Thanksgiving to be an all-American traditional family dinner, not the Chances' mere pizza. Jimmy even insists to invites the maternal grandparents, Dr. Dale and his wife Margine, who went crazy out of grief over their daughter's crime and execution. Jimmy painstakingly makes his family accommodate Dale's weird 'therapy' for Margine, only to be rewarded by Hope being kidnapped, gets her back and still extends a second invitation. Meanwhile lonely Barney from the supermarket offers to come cook a traditional feast for the all, instead of having to eat his all alone.

Every year, supermarket manager Barney must chose an act for the 'Grocery-Palooza', a free show for the customers. Jimmy learns that one of the many, lame options is washed-up one-hit 'rock star' Smokey, Burt's teenager musical hero. The gang moves heaven and earth to see to it that Smokey is hired and Burt as his guitarist, only the life-long dream comes with matching stage-fright.

Jimmy refuses to let Burt sell the last of the stock of hottest toy he arranges each Christmas, demanding it for Hope, remembering how hard it was to sit by the pile himself. Burt's promise is as worthless as ever, and when he finally agrees, the only childless client, supermarket executive Barney, proves a hard nut. Jimmy ultimately allows Virginia to sign up Hope, and thus all the Chances, for the annual live church nativity crib, despite his trauma having been dragged to every performance just so she could get on stage, as a way to fight the stigma of serial killer's child. However they didn't count on the Asian new parishioners.

The Chances get caught in Virginia's web of lies when her cousin Delilah, whom she told Maw-Maw was dead, turns up to claim her share of the estate, her business being wiped out by the crisis. Their rivalry started when Delilah, who was spoiled and better at everything else, lost most desirable teenager Burt to jealous Virginia, so she proposes an alternative mode of payment: in 'bedroom' kind. Jimmy was to mind the 'deceased' inconspicuously, but she escapes and crashes back in.

Realizing the three adult Chances are klutzes and a danger to themselves, Jimmy worries whether Hope will be taken care of after an accident. After an attempt to have them teach each other 'survival tricks' collapses in bickering, Jimmy drags his parents to dodgy lawyer Wally Phipps, who inspires including a fourth potential guardian, Sabrina. Actually she's afraid of the responsibility, and Burt is offended that she ranks higher. Their survival skills are tested frightfully realistically when an armed Maw Maw mistakes them all for 'dangerous mongooses'.

When Burt is introduced to a book on sleep-training, he and Virginia decide to try it on baby Hope. Meanwhile, Jimmy's wild new girlfriend introduces him to a special beverage that takes him on a scary trip.

To flirt or not to flirt, that is the question.

Barney tells the team he loses each year's annual commercial competition for the store, so now he wants to recruit his employees to compete for this year's submission; unfortunately, flattery and considerations like fair-play, and team spirit, get in the way. As Hope's baby-monitor accidentally tunes into a neighbors house, eavesdropping Burt discovers Andrew is being abused by his tyrannical, impossible-to-please wife, Donna, and wants to help. Virginia is reluctant, not wanting to be seen as a nosy neighbor, but agrees to help (which proves harder then expected).

Jimmy doesn't mind at 23 sharing his birthday with Maw Maw, although it was hell as a kid, when she had lots of friends and he none. When he turned 18, in his impertinent Goth period (alias 'Drakkar Noir'), she 'finally' felt able to throw the Chances trio out of her home, so they had to grow up suddenly, seeking real job incomes supplemented by devious ways to skin the supermarket. Five years ago however, her mind went, so they got the house back with her as senile resident hazard.

Virginia, Burt, Jimmy, Sabrina, Maw Maw and Hope camp out on the front lawn after their house becomes tented for termites, but getting caught in the rain is the least of their problems. After learning that Hope hit a boy at day care, the family attempts to stop arguing out of fear that she will follow in her serial killer mom's footsteps.

A thirteen-year-old kid makes a run for Sabrina, which drives Jimmy absolutely crazy. Meanwhile, Maw Maw swallows her gold tooth and Burt and Virginia contemplate retrieving it.

Jimmy, Virginia, Burt, Sabrina, Maw Maw and Hope borrow a house to impress Burt's wealthy parents who have decided at the last minute to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family. Things get interesting when the real homeowners return early, and Burt's folks get a taste of what life is really like for Burt and Virginia.

The Chances dream of winning riches and fame at the National Invention Convention Extravaganza, whose star Andrew Dice Clay is announced to a stop in town. Each family member is supposed to come up with one brilliant novelty, but only greediest Virginia actually does so alone, sponges under the armpits to save deodorant. Jimmy dares not offend Sabrina by turning down her 'improvement', which actually wrecks his idea, a mob operated by a crawling baby. Burt and half-wit neighbor protégé Andrew come up with bro-gurt, macho flavors of yogurt. Competition day proves ruthless for candidates on various grounds, with a sting.

Jimmy's close relationship with daughter Hope has him sewing dresses, baking cookies, and wearing fancy hats at tea parties until Burt yells at him to "Stop being a girl!". In an attempt to be a little more 'dangerous' he decides to spend some time with Frank. Strangely enough waking up in Franks house after a night of partying lets Jimmy discover a new side to Frank, one that he really wants to bond with to the rest of the families horror. Discovering they were bullied by the same guy back in school, Jimmy and Frank set off on a quest for revenge that has some pretty surprising revelations in store for everyone involved.

A remarkably recognizable movie forces the Chances to have a look at their own family life. For Jimmy, Maw-Maw's spirit takes him on a frightening journey to an alternative future, if he hadn't met Hope's mother and hence remained childless. the consequences prove surprisingly grave for just about every relative and even his supermarket colleagues.

Based on a block assembly toy, Jimmy and parents proudly assume Hope inherited her serial ma's IQ. Afraid of looking stupid to Sabrina as his daughter outsmarts him, Jimmy decides to return to high-school. Refusing to be left as the family's dumbest, his parents follow suit. Old teacher Mr. Swift remembers all three formerly abusive, unmotivated dropouts and enjoys humiliating them in class. Tutoring by Sabrina, Frank and Mawmaw helps Jimmy, Burt and Virginia, but only enough to pass in a few courses each. To avoid utter failure, they decide to cheat so at least Jimmy gets his G.E.D.

Tired of losing family possession to the pawn shop, Burt is tempted to resume gambling. Unlike his officially addicted period, he's on a winning streak. Virginia sees that as a handicap in curing him, but Jimmy and she end up playing and winning too, so the bookies want to cut them off. However the pivotal moment comes when Sabrina accuses them of missing Hope's first school play.

Burt's annual tax return frenzy leads to a sneer about 'mere' cleaners making Virginia meanly blow all his stacked firm finances documentation into a mess. Desperate, he turns to Barney, who suggests hiring a manager and hesitantly accepts the job. Barney hires two eccentric Asian acrobats, who demonstrate the bliss and frustration of not being the boss anymore. Stil vexed, Virginia seeks an independent career of her own and chooses as example the tarot reader Sabrina and her fiancé Wyatt turn to. As their questions concern a move to Africa, Jimmy is desperate to get his rival overseas, not his beloved, and expects madame ma to pull that off. However her arrogant advice has more impact then she ever guessed or cares to take responsibility for.

Bored and increasingly desperate for a distraction even they can afford, Burt and Virginia try out various hobbies, until they agree improvisation acting fits them scoundrels. When Jimmy feels Sabrina a lost cause after her engagement with Wyatt, they also advise making her jealous of an imaginary perfect girl. Jimmy fails to wriggle out of a double date, so he needs to hire Mary-Louise from the acting class to play one. That proves harder but also more rewarding then expected.

In a revolutionary mood, Sabrina starts a wide protest, but once the police arrives her followers invoke excuses one by one, even Jimmy deserts. Stubbornly provoking arrest, she lands in a prison. Her block is handled by jealous, frustrated jailer Rikki Hargrove, who feels deserted by her since their girl scouts days and seizes her chance to make Sabrina sweat. Hell-bent on preserving mayor Suzie Hellmann as Hope's sole female role model, Virginia saves the corrupt crazy bitch's bacon. As a reward, Burt extracts three wishes for the family. He squanders his on a stop sign, she hers on a cooler park for the barrio, but when Jimmy tries to use his to free Sabrina, Suzie, dumped by businessman Richard Galleria, demands a date with the cute Chance and turns on the family when politely turned down for fidelity's sake.

Virginia finds a way to earn some fast cash. Jimmy and Sabrina worry about the safety of Hope's toys and crib.
